I recently got it in my head that I wanted to take some time-lapse photos showing the oxidation of various bright-polished metals over the course of a week or so. Investigating the possibility of setting up an intervalometer for my elderly Coolpix 4300 quickly became frustrating, however, as I realized that I was facing a nightmare of proprietary connectors, unpublished protocols, and exotic cables. Nikon manufactured a time-lapse controller compatible with my camera (the MC-EU1), but all the reviews I've seen are unfavorable, and I can't find one for sale for less than $85.
To make matters worse, it turns out...

My post last week about shadowgraphy and Schlieren photography generated a lot of enthusiastic responses and not a few requests for a more detailed tutorial. Among the comments was one by Ian Smith, who has a great page here describing his own Schlieren photography set-up. (While you're there, take a moment to appreciate the fact that Ian's URL is "www.ian.org"....think he's been around the 'net awhile?) Thanks again, Ian!

Our friends over at iFixIt.com just couldn't keep their screwdrivers and spudgers off of the new Coolpix S1000pj, the digital camera with a built-in video projector. They just had to find out how Nikon fit all that bleeding-edge tech into that tiny camera case.
Here's some of what they discovered in their testing and teardown:
* A room has to be quite dark to view the projector's image properly. We expected as much given the size of the projector, but the image quality is mediocre at best. Anything that's projected looks like it was shot in the '70s.
* Surprisingly, both the front and rear outer cases are machined out of alu...

Here's a great example of what makes the Arduino platform so great. In need of a basic frequency counter on the quick, I dug up some code & schematics based on the ATTiny2313. But just before breaking out my programmer + protoboard, I thought to have a look Arduino.cc in case someone had written similar code for Arduino. Lo and behold - Martin Nawrath's Frequency Counter library was but a few clicks into the site's playgrou...

In this week's Ask CRAFT column, I fielded a reader's question about photographing your projects. It's applicable for all kinds of makers, so go on and check it out!
